What is God's will for my life?

We spend so much time trying to decipher the will of God. There are endless books and articles written that try to describe this. If there is a question that troubles the human heart more than anything it is this one. If there is an answered question that satisfies the human heart more than any other, it is this one. I’d like to simplify things for you. Instead of developing a doctrinal essay explaining the types of wills of God, I’ll give you a list of verses that explicitly say “this is the will of God”. It is important even crucial for you to know the will of God as it is written in His word. This knowledge will help you in so many areas of your life if you ask the Lord to open the eyes of your understanding (Ephesians 1:18).

Deciphering the secret things

As Christians, we make a grave mistake when we believe that we can decipher the secret will of God. His secret will, is not for us to know. The bible says that the secret things belong to the Lord our God but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever that we may follow all the words of this law (Deuteronomy 29:29). What are those things revealed? The verse says, it’s all in His Word.  It’s hard to believe that we seek after the things that are hidden when the things that are revealed, such as it is God’s will that you should be sanctified, that you should avoid sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3), we can’t even grasp or abide by.

Paul says to the Corinthians, I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it and you are still not ready (3:2). I’m not saying that once you have a perfect grasp on what is revealed then you can move unto what is hidden. What is hidden, will never be ours to know in this life because it will take us an entire lifetime and more to comprehend what is revealed! If you don’t know the will of God (the things written explicitly in His word) you are walking blindly in the dark. The will of God enlightens your path and strengthens your footsteps so you do not err. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against thee said David (Psalm 119:11).

Meditate on these verses

As you meditate on these verses you will realize that the will of God for your life is not a mystery. His will for you is in His word, seek for it there. Some of these verses might come as a surprise to you and some might be familiar. You might realize as you read this that you have been straying from His will and that repentance is needed. Whatever your realization might be, seek the Lord in prayer so that He might fulfill His will in your life. The will of God

Verses about the will of God for your life

  1. To give thanks in all circumstances
    1 Thessalonians 5:18:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
  2. To rejoice at all times
    1 Thessalonians 5:18:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Supporting verses: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy… (Galatians 5:22-23), rejoicing is a sign that the Holy Spirit is at work in your life.

  1. To pray without ceasing
    1 Thessalonians 5:18:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Supporting verses: Men always ought to pray and not lose heart (words of Jesus in Luke 18)

So far we’ve only developed one verse and we see 3 things that we can already seek after in our lives. Let’s us ask God to give us a heart of thanksgiving, joy and prayer for this is His will. 1 John 5:14 tells us this is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that He hears us, we know that we have the petitions we have asked of Him.

Notice the part that says “according to his will”, if it’s not according to his will, this verse is not applicable! The verse doesn’t simply say “if we ask anything, he hears us”, the emphasis is on “according to His will”, not “anything”. Pray biblically.

  1. To be sanctified
    1 Thessalonians 4:3:
It is God’s will that you should be sanctified and that you should avoid sexual immorality.
    Supporting verses: Matthew 19:4-5, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Galatians 5:19-21
  2. To avoid sexual immorality
1 Thessalonians 4:3: It is God’s will that you should be sanctified and that you should avoid sexual immorality
Talking about sex in Christian circles is the elephant in the room, not because it’s taboo but because no one wants to hear that it’s a sin. It feels good, it looks good but it brings about death when it’s engaged in outside of marriage. Sex outside of marriage, is sinful. I won’t sugar coat it, I won’t try to say it in such a way where someone walks away from this article and thinks this is ok. I speak as someone who stepped into marriage without her virginity and engaged in things that I am now extremely ashamed of “therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed of?” (Romans 6:21). Nothing! There are no benefits.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says “or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceivedneither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

The one who is sexually immoral in the eyes of God is just as equally sinful as an adulterer and a drunkard. Some of you reading this article think that homosexuality is the worst sin imaginable to man, if that’s the case than according to this verse, sexual immorality, stealing, greediness, getting drunk is just as sinful and an abomination before the Lord.

Ask yourself: What benefit am I receiving from this? In light of eternity, will I look back at this moment and this choice with rejoicing or will I weep?

Sexual immorality isn’t just about having sex.

Sexual immorality is engaging in things that are impure in the sight of God. Pornography, masturbation, meditating on sexual things, not going “all the way” and the list goes on. This is also applicable in marriage, you can be married and still be sexually immoral. Marriage does not solve anything. If you were addicted to porn before marriage, it will continue unless the Lord rids you of it. Please, seek counselling, seek help, fast and pray when it comes to fighting sexual temptation. You cannot do it on your own.

  1. To do good even when you are reviled
1 Peter 2:15:For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
Supporting verse: When you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 1 Peter 2:20
  2. Submit to authority
    1 Peter 2:13-15
  3. To understand His will
    Ephesians 5:17:
Therefore, do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is.

According to these verses, God’s explicit will for you life is that:
-you give thanks in all circumstances
-rejoice at all times
-pray without ceasing
-that you are sanctified and avoid sexual immorality
-do good, even when you are reviled
-submit to authority
-that you understand His will.

God wills that you understand His will. In the words of Paul, you need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. He never promised it would be easy to follow him, that’s why He tells us to count the cost but He did promise that it will be worth it. At His right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11).

I will leave you with these verses to meditate on and will continue with more in the second part. If you have a topic that you’d like me to further develop, please let me know by emailing me or leaving a comment below. God bless you.
